In addition to AGBU’s involvement through the UN Department of Public Information (DPI), the AGBU-UN SIG has been researching other ways to partner with the UN to advance Armenian interests, including our support of projects developed by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) based in Armenia.

Armenia Vocational Education and Training Project
As Armenia’s infrastructure expands, the need for a highly trained vocational workforce becomes critical to the country’s economic longevity. Currently, more than 36,000 students enrolled in Armenia’s Vocational Education and Training (VET) schools are underserved due to inadequate school facilities, a lack of educational materials, and other shortcomings.
The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Armenia, with the financial help of the Government of Denmark, has launched the “Modernization of Vocational Education and Training System” Project, aimed at strengthening and enhancing the vocational-technical education in Armenia. Apart from restoring and improving the vocational education centers, another crucial issue is helping students obtain their diplomas.
AGBU, in its commitment to education, has partnered with UNDP to raise funds for socially disadvantaged students at Gyumri State Technical College.
The College specializes in the training of railway technical staff and is the only institution of this specialty in Armenia. Many of the students at Gyumri State Technical College are not hired upon the completion of their coursework, because they are not in possession of a diploma proving completion of their studies. These students have not received diplomas because they cannot afford to pay their tuition debts.
AGBU’s UN Special Interest Group will be hosting a benefit reception in support of this project on June 11, 2009 at the Megerian Rug Gallery in New York City. The program will feature UN dignitaries and guest speaker Dr. Ian Bremmer.
